What this site records
This site is deliberately sparing. It sets no cookies, loads no analytics or tracking services and has your browser load nothing from other servers. On the German pages, the reports in the “Current warnings” box are fetched by our server from the Verbraucherzentrale NRW’s Phishing-Radar (via its Mastodon channel) and from Watchlist Internet; your browser connects to neither. There is nothing here you would need to consent to.
Your practice progress
Which stations you have completed, your score and the date — and which cases added later you have already practised, whether you have already solved the exercise on the home page, and whether you have hidden the “New since you last practised” box — are stored only in your browser (localStorage, key pms-progress-v1) and never sent to us. We need this so the course can show your progress, suggest a refresher and point out what's new since you last practised. The data stays until you delete it — at any time on the course page (“Delete my progress”) or via your browser settings. Some browsers remove it by themselves after a while without a visit (Safari on iPhone and iPad after seven days). In class mode, a flag is kept only for the current tab (sessionStorage, pms-kurs, gone when you close the tab), progress is not saved at all, and progress saved earlier is not shown.
Text size
If you choose larger text at the top of the page, your browser remembers that choice (localStorage, key fnd-text-size) so the next page appears in the same size. It is never sent to us and stays until you choose normal text again or clear your browser data.
Your way through “No magic”
If you finish a floor of “No magic” or open one from its floor plan, your browser remembers which floors you have finished and which one you opened last (localStorage, key fnd-nm-progress-v1), so the floor plan can show ticks and offer “Carry on where you left off”. Merely looking stores nothing, and nothing is sent to us. The data stays until you delete it with “Forget my progress” below the floor plan or via your browser settings. In class mode, nothing is stored.
Pages saved for offline use
Only if you choose “Save on this device” on the course page does your browser keep copies of our public pages, with their fonts, images and scripts, on your device, so that they open without a connection. A small program from this site, a service worker, looks after this; the copies are kept in the browser's cache storage (names beginning with pms-). They contain nothing about you, and nothing is sent to us. Whenever you visit with a connection, the browser fetches the latest version. When saving, the site asks your browser to keep the copies permanently; some browsers ask you about this. “Remove saved pages” in the same place, or clearing this site's data in your browser, removes everything. Without that choice, this site stores no copies.
App on your home screen
If you install the site as an app or put it on your home screen, your browser and your device create the icon and the app. The app shows the same pages as the browser; nothing is sent to us.
Calendar reminder
If you choose “Add reminders to my calendar”, your browser creates the calendar file itself. It contains only a title, three dates and the address of the refresher page — nothing is sent to us.
Server log files (hosting)
When a page is requested, our hosting provider (Microsoft, Azure data centre in the EU) processes the technically necessary connection data: IP address, date and time, the requested address, the amount of data transferred and basic browser and operating-system information. This serves only the secure, stable operation of the site; we have not switched on any file logging of this connection data. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR (legitimate interest in secure operation). Microsoft acts as a processor.
Operational monitoring
To detect errors and slow pages, the server sends technical operating data (requests, errors, response times) to Azure Application Insights. No cookies are involved and no user profile is created. According to Microsoft, the IP address is used only briefly for a rough location lookup (country, region, city) and is then discarded, not stored. The operating data is deleted after 90 days. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR.
Contact
If you e-mail us, your message stays in our mailbox; we don't pass it on and delete it once your request has been dealt with, unless we are legally required to keep it. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (b) and (f) GDPR.
Your rights
Access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability and objection under Art. 15–21 GDPR, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Requests by e-mail to the address in the imprint.
